My first steps into the realms of woodturning were taken by accident. During years living in New Zealand in the mid-1990s, I enrolled on a woodworking evening course. At that time my thoughts were more of tables and cabinets rather than of hollow forms and chasing threads. In a moment of workshop exploration, I found a lathe, had a play and was immediately enthralled by the woodturning process. Working with wet wood particularly excites me. Working straight from the log, much of my inspiration is gained. I endeavour to create hollow forms, vessels and sculptural pieces that reflect a lifelong love of trees. The immediacy and spontaneity of using wet timber on the lathe is such a joy, be it a finished article or a medium upon which to then apply further creative processes. Dry, well-seasoned timber is used however, for crafting high quality, hand-chased, threaded boxes. Whether the finished items are functional or purely decorative; whether the timber is plain or highly figured, form and sensuous curves are paramount in complementing the timber’s inherent beauty. 7Back to Home Page |

In the past four years, I have had pleasure not only creating turned items, but also teaching and demonstrating the process too. It has been an honour to demonstrate at numerous woodturning clubs across the UK. So to at AWGB seminars, Ripon, the Utah symposium in the USA and at the symposium in Ireland. It has been an immense privileged to study with some of the best turners in the world. In particular Allan Batty here in the UK and Betty Scarpino and Virginia Dotson in the United States. In sharing my enthusiasm for woodturning, I hope that I may encourage others to take-up the lathe and embark on an extremely rewarding and absorbing activity. 2008 June 2008 American Association of Woodturners Symposium – Demonstrator August 2008 Arrowmont Arts and Crafts - Teaching Assistant 2007 October 2007 Irish Woodturning Symposium.
