Tom Pockley has been a member of the Register since 1997. His work varies in both size and purpose; some pieces are large and sculptural, some intricate and delicate. The last year has included commissions to make large hemispheres 600 mm in diameter and batches of knitting needles 250mm long and 3mm in diameter. He also makes bowls and hollow forms, usually using timber grown in Britain, varying from functional to purely aesthetic. He enjoys using the irregularities in grain pattern found in wood that has been stressed and also the distortion that comes from using green wood, especially when the distortion enhances the flowing lines and contrasts of the piece. Tom uses the experience of thirty years of formal teaching as a foundation in running courses for individuals or couples. These courses are intensive, practical and as informal as possible, the intention being that all techniques are learnt by experience. The experience of teaching also means that Tom enjoys demonstrating to clubs and is able to talk and work at the same time. Tom is proud to have gained second prize in the Worshipful Company of Turners Master’s Competition for Open Turning on two occasions, a competition open to both ornamental and plain turners. He also had a piece selected for the AWGB’s 'Wonders in Wood' in 1997. |
